how can I updated my Microsoft office that I have to be able to work on my Mac?

My Microsoft office is not working on the new update, how can I make it work without having to purchase it all over again?

MacBook Pro 13”, macOS 10.15

What version of Office. 2011 and earlier are no longer supported by Microsoft and are not compatible with Catalina.

2016 is compatible, but you'll have to make sure you have the latest updates for it from Microsoft.

2016 and Office 365 are compatible with Catalina.

You can't. Microsoft is going to charge to upgrade.

You might check out LibreOffice and find out if meets your needs. It is free.

Thanks, I learned that the hard way, lol, unfortunately. I did look at the 365 but just downloaded the Libreoffice that was recommended and it will serve my need for right now. Thanks again.
