is malware software necessary
I use safari exclusively. Recently, I had a screen pop up tell me it detected 3 viruses on my computer, scan, and then download software. Should I do this? Is malware or virus protection needed on a Mac using Safari?

Please do not download any software from that popup. It is a scam.
There are no known Mac viruses at this time and anti-virus software tends to interfere with normal computer operations.
Malware can be a problem, but for most people, running a full time malware protection program isn't required. If you do have a malware/adware problem, try Malwarebytes. There is a free version. This program which was written by Thomas R, a long time poster. The program will search for malware/adware. The program will do the work for you which makes it easy. It may be necessary to run more than one scan. After running the scans, restart the computer.
