a new window opened and said 3 viruses were detected and to click to run a repair/scan. I've never seen this before and always wary of ploys to get you to click and chose to immediately close the window.
Now I'm wondering if it was legit.

Such popup messages are scams. Do not interact with the message. Close the offending page, and avoid sites that are involved in such bogus advertising tactics.

It isn't. The only time a message warning of malware in a Mac or iOS web browser will be legitimate is if you've just uploaded a file.
