While the files are migrating there are error messages next to numerous songs. Are these true errors? Or is this a temporary state until the process moves further along, self correcting?

The problem seems to be that the external drive is the source of the music. Until a song starts playing (need not finish) there is an initial exclamation point icon indicating no source music. Migration cannot happen if iTunes doesn’t have or recognize a source. Once you start a song the exclamation point disappears and the song will migrate (not instantly, but no impediment). I'm looking for a way to automate this 'start a song' process, since I have so many. Manually it’s a killer. Thoughts on that appreciated.

If you start iTunes when the drive isn't ready iTunes will assume that all tracks are unavailable and it will also reset the path to the media folder. You should check that the media folder is so the folder you've chosen, close iTunes, then reopen. It should then be able to play any file you select without temporarily showing an exclamation mark. File > Library > Update iCloud Music Library should then be able to complete the matching/uploading process.
