Importing Photos and iCloud

When I import my photos from my camera and SD card to my MacBook it saves my photos to the iCloud which I like. However, they also download onto my phone; therefore, I have a TON of photos that I do not want on my phone. Is there a way I can keep them on the iCloud and on my Mac but not download to my phone?
