my ipod says “ipod is disabled connect to itunes”. how do i do this with out re setting the whole ipod?

You don't, if the iPod is disabled you will have to reset it back to factory defaults and you can then restore to your latest backup : If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support
