Troubles Burning MP4 File to a Disc Via Rioddas External DVD Drive

I've been trying to burn an MP4 file to a Memorex disc (16X, 4.7 GB, DVD+R) via an external CD/DVD drive by Rioddas, however my computer (Macbook Pro) doesn't seem to recognize that there is an empty disc in the drive (said drive is able to read and play movies on this computer). How can I fix this issue? Is the problem the DVD itself or the drive not being recognized somehow by Mac OS (at least with regards to burning discs)?

The leading app for creating DVD discs on a Mac that can be played on standard DVD players is Toast Titanium although this is a commercial app you have to pay for.

There is a free app a lot of people use but it is less capable and might require you to do a bit more work yourself.

(The main issue is likely to be ensuring files are in the right format.)
