It was released five years ago. It will still work as a phone as well as many apps. When there are critical updates, Apple has made them available for older versions of iOS.

The iPhone 6 will not run iOS 13 but that doesn't necessarily mean there won't be any security updates. Apple recently released iOS 9.3.6 and iOS 10.3.4
