Why can't you backup to the cloud ?

trying to backup my iphone 6 but it wants me to buy icloud space, I don't want to buy space is there another way I can backup?

If your backup would be more than 5 gig you will either need to buy extra iCloud storage, change what you are backing up, or back up to your computer's iTunes instead
