Version 9.3.5 wanting to update to iOS 10 - latest

My iPod 5th Gen is updated to the "latest" update which is v9.3.5 and I can't download any apps etc. because of it. How can I update to the newest software?

A fifth generation iPod touch can't be updated past 9.3.5.
