Files being deleted from MacBook when turning off Icloud

I am trying to turn off Icloud drive on my Macbook Air for documents. However, when I turn off Icloud for the documents, they are deleted from my Macbook. I do not want to store these items in Icloud. The files appear to be stored on my local drive. Any help would be appreciated
