I was wondering how iPhones get into recovery mode if there is nothing wrong with the phone? My sister had an iPhone 6s and she got a new phone and didn't use the iPhone 6s for a year. Then she tried turning it on and the recovery screen came on.
usually you have to press the side button and the home button at the same time on that device while it is plugged into an iTunes computer using a USB cord for long enough that the iTunes logo appears. But it is possible that the phone had an issue and decided itself that it needed plugged into iTunes.
