How do I wipe or remove hard drive before cycling

my 6.5yr old iMac went pop so I can’t wipe my data off it (I have a back up). If I send it in to be recycled is there any guarantee my personal data will be safe/wiped or am I running the risk of the data being misused?

Can any data be recovered from erased iMac after it is I have erased and overwritten my internal hard drive of my 2009 iMac as per Apple Support advice prior to arranging for it to be recycled. I have now replaced it.So my question is: have I done enough or will I have to keep ad infinitum.

you can take out the harddisk and put it in an external usb enclosure and format it

or you can put it in the oven a bit, magnetic storage is ruined by heat
