can i update my my old mac to get iMovie or do i have to buy a new one

Hi,

If you can upgrade your operating system to High Sierra, or Mojoave, you can get current iMovie 10.1.12.

This Apple support link discusses the requirements for High Sierra and you can also find out whether you can upgrade to Mojave:
