can't format my time machine external drive.

I got a Seagate 1 TB external drive and I partitioned it into two sections, one being used by Time Machine. But currently I erased the section for Time Machine and it became "unformatted" and can't be be formatted.

How can I re-format my external drive without erasing the contents of my disk? My LaCie 3 TB Backup Drive stopped backing up my LaCie 6 TB external drive. This happened a few days ago immediately after I had my iMac HD replaced by a 1 TB SSD and re-installing my OS. After doing some web research, I realized my 6 TB drive was formatted in Ex-FAT. I read in an earlier post that Time Machine doesn't work with Ex-Fat. Can someone please tell me how I can re-format this drive without erasing my 1.72 TB contents, as I have nowhere to store this amount of data in the interim.

Cannot erase or reformat due to Time Machine inProgress files. I have an external LaCie disk with two TimeMachine inProgress files which won't erase and I can't reformat the disk either as it won't unmount. Any ideas on how I can reformat this external disk? I'm running Mojave on a Macbook Pro.

Reformat the parent drive and start over.

Disk Utility>View>Show All Devices.

3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.
