RESOLVED. I took my iPad Pro to the Apple Store Genius Bar. The technician attempted recovery mode first, but when that failed, resorted to DFU mode---which quickly resolved the issue. The iPad was overwritten with the latest version of iOS and then we discussed restoring of data and apps via my iCloud Backup. RESOLVED. The iPad Pro is working fine once again.
For those looking for a straight-forward, no-nonsense solution, do what I did and take it to the Apple Store Genius Bar.

Try recovery mode before you use DFU mode.

Tried recovery mode, but did not succeed. Tried several times, my MacBook Pro simply isn't seeing it. I don't mind if it's totally wiped and I have to start "from scratch" as all my data is safely in iCloud.
DFU mode? Make an appointment at my local Apple Store Genius Bar?
Thanks, will try recovery mode first.
I’m glad that they were able to fix it for you.
