External hard drive will not boot to iMac

Have external hard drive with photos. after shutting down, next time it said "disc not ejected properly" disconnected drive and when I reconnected it, it is not recognized by computer

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

  1. Please shut down the computer
  2. then disconnect the EHD
  3. then re-start the computer in Safe Mode per the directions in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
  4. then restart normally
  5. connect the EHD.
