Photos deleted from phone also deleted in iCloud?

After making sure the photos on my iPhone were uploaded to iCloud, I deleted them on my phone by selecting each day's photos and then clicking the Trash button. But when I go back to iCloud, they were deleted from there, too. And they're not in the "recently deleted" folder. What's up? Where are my photos?

I don't know why they wouldn't be in Recently Deleted, both on iCloud and on your iPhone, if it has been less than 30 days but as to why they were deleted from iCloud, see the following.

iCloud Photos is a syncing service. Any photo you delete from a device where iCloud Photos is turned on will also be deleted from iCloud and from any other device connected to iCloud Photos. You can potentially reduce the storage space required on a device by turning on Optimize Storage. See: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204264

Apple does not currently offer cloud-only storage for photos. If that is what you want or need, you may want to explore 3rd party options such as Google Photos or Dropbox.

Another way that photos may be on iCloud (if you don’t have iCloud Photo Library turned on) is via a backup of an iOS device. The only thing you can do with a backup is use it to restore a device or set up a new device. The contents of backups are not viewable at iCloud.com and if you delete a photo from a device it will not be included in future backups and will be lost.

Thanks for your response. I've done this before the same way and made sure the photos were in iCloud before deleting them. This is the first time I deleted them on my phone and they also were deleted in iCloud. I have retained many photos in iCloud after clearing my phone before. Bummer. I lost a lot of good photos. I'm getting to hate the whole Apple ecosystem.
