Dose swiping up on iPhone Xs Max close the App?

I'm wondering how to close apps on the iPhone Xs max. Does swiping up do this? On my old iPhone 6 closing apps required double pressing the Home button then swiping up to close various open apps.

iPhone XS Max, iOS 12

To enter the Multitasking menu, swipe up from the bottom and hold your finger for a while in the center of the screen. You will see a menu with launched apps. You can swipe them up from here to close, but you do not have to do that. iOS is smart and it can manage these apps.
