Finder Sidebar doesn't show Desktop, Documents, Downloads, even though checked in Finder preferences

With the latest Mojave update, most of the items that used to be in the Finder sidebar have been removed (all but iCloud). I use these as a shortcut all the time, and it's a pain to have to search and find the folders. When I go to Finder preferences, the folders I want in the sidebar are checked, but it doesn't seem to bring them back when I open Finder. What can be done?

Is it possible you have inadvertently hidden your Favourites in the Sidebar. If you move your cursor to the right of Favourites

do you get the option to Show the list of Favourites. see below,
