I'm trying to use Target display mode but on the apple site it says target display mode works iMacs and lists them and stops at 2014 models. I was wondering if someone had experience with this.

Nope' look right under the list of supported iMac's where it states
"iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later iMac models can't be used as Target Display Mode displays"
