iMovie version 10.1.11 keeps quitting unexpectedly

MacBook Pro 13” (Late 2013)

Currently running the latest version of iOS (10.14.5 Mojave)

As soon as I try to open a project or export it, iMovie just quits.. I tried restarting the computer but nothing, also tried deleting cache but also nothing..Other users (admins) on the computer do not have this issue..If the issue cannot be solved at least I want to transfer my movies to another folder where I can access them.

Hi, Kennedy_,

I assume that the crashing is happening with all of your projects. If you have not tried opening more than one project, try some others to rule out corruption that might be confined to just one project.

If the crashing is global, here are five procedures that you can try to address issue:

  1. Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if the crashing issue is solved.

2.If still no luck, try booting up in Safe Mode (see Finder help menu for instructions) and as soon as everything loads immediately shut down and restart in normal mode. Sometimes that clears out conflicts that cause crashes.

3.If the problem persists, try opening iMovie in a new library by opening iMovie while holding down the Option key and, in the box that appears, choose a different library or create a new library. See if that works. If you create a new library populate it with a project or two to test.

4.Try opening iMovie in a new user account, either one you create or by using the Guest account on your Mac. See if iMovie works properly there.

5.All else failing, try redownloading iMovie from the online app store. To do that, move your current iMovie app from the Applications folder to the trash, but do not empty the trash. Then go to the app store, sign in, and navigate to your Purchases folder and redownload iMovie. If for some reason you can't get a new download, move your old iMovie app from the trash to the Applications folder.

The message indicates that something is amiss with your current library. The problem might be caused by corruption in the project that is causing the crashing. I have occasionally experienced the same "Damaged" message that you have received, and have clicked on "Repair" and that repaired the issue without incident. So you might try that, although no guarantees. If the project still crashes you might try copying it to a newly created library (see Step 3 in my previous post) and see if it will open there. If it does, then you can delete the malfunctioning original from your current library.

Basically, you open both libraries so that they display in the iMovie media side bar. Then go to the Projects browser (where your projects are displayed as icons) and move your cursor over the title of the damaged project. In the drop down menu, choose to copy the project to the new library that you created. I recommend that you copy the project to the new library rather than move it, so you don't lose the project if something goes wrong. If all is well, you can always go back and delete it later from your current library.

Here's a link that further explains how to copy a project from one library to another:

Hi Rich,

I tried 1, 2, 3 and 4. iMovie works fine for other users on the computer and all files have been restored to normal and are now working except one..the one that cause the problem in the first place..Is there any way to export the file or move it or remove the corrupted files without loosing the whole project?

Thank you for your help,

Kennedy
