Can't save Word documents as PDFs

It's been working fine until tonight. I've tried 'save as' and 'print as' PDF. I have tried closing and reopening Word. I have tried giving my file different names. I have tried removing all the physical printer options in favor of 'save as PDF.' My Mac is an M1 2020 MacBook with 8GB / 250GB memory, with 70GB storage available, running macOS Tahoe 26.2.

Where are you trying to export/save the file? Are you using the current version of Word (16.104)?

It's working fine for me (26.2 and current Word), with the destination as a folder on the desktop. Works if I use Save As... and set the format to PDF (but note that to use the first option, best for electronic distribution, you need to have MS Online services enabled in the Privacy settings; I don't so I need to select the second 'best for printing' option for Save As to work.

It also works fine if I select File menu > Print and use the Save as PDF option.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.
