How do I back up AppleTV purchases and play these again (with HomePod audio)?

How do i back up purchased tv series? I previously believed the movies and tv series I purchased on iTunes and Apple TV store would be mine to watch at any time. However I’ve learned these “purchases” are more like long-time rentals that can be revoked without notice at any time. (It seems the content owner has this right - though many people in that food chain have benefited from the proceeds of my often very expensive investment in their series.)

It appears my assumption that moving to a cloud host for my media purchases (e.g. Apple TV) was a false delusion on my part. I find I am required to back up all of these purchases somewhere - and that this is something I was naive not to have known all along.

I’m unable to find the best way to not only manage these downloads, but also how to easily store them in a way that would allow them to easily be played back via Apple TV. Essentially, I need the audio to be played using HomePods (I have 7 AppleTV 4K units and 14 HomePods, which are the only speakers I own).

So once my Apple media purchases have been backed up somewhere, somehow…how do I then find and play these in a way that allows me to use other (perhaps foolish) investments in Apple’s ecosystem? Or do I need to throw this all away and regress to dvds, dvd players and some other audio components?

Thank you, but could you perhaps provide this guidance more specifically? You’re suggesting I download them to some physical device (not to iCloud)? And then what? Ideally, what might a complete recommended solution be, especially for “restoration” and being able to once again play these back - with HomePods for audio?

Oh thank you. This is what I needed to know. I’m only backing up to prevent permanent loss of purchased movies and tv series due to issues with digital rights which all too frequently just disappear from my AppleTV 4K systems, never to be seen again. Once backed up, I’d like to play them on my TVs via the AppleTV units, so I can use HomePods for audio. I don’t want to stream to or from other devices (iPhone, iPads). I am just hoping I could back up to some location I could reference from inside my AppleTV 4K’s settings.

Frankly, I see this removal of digital content as akin to someone coming into my house and saying, “Yeah, those box set dvds of Red Dwarf, we bought the rights to that stuff and we’re taking them off your shelf. They’re ours now, and you can just find a way to buy them again. So long.” I mean, someone got royalty payments when I paid $120 a box set of some series or other, right? The right owners got the right compensation at that time. If the rights change hands, does it seem fair that I lose the ability to enjoy what I’ve already paid for? Doesn’t seem equitable to me.

But given that it is what it is, why can’t I just have my stuff automatically, perpetually backed up to the storage area on my 4K boxes? Or to iCloud? Why all of this rigamarole with saving to a disc, then transferring to another device and then finding a way to get these to a shared platform, etc. It’s like the 90’s all over again. Otherwise, let’s just not call it a purchase. Call it an undetermined-time-rental - and say that access can be pulled without warning at any time. Today, tomorrow, any time.

Anyhow, thank you very much for sharing the specifics about how you’re managing all of this. Very kind and much appreciated.
