On Apple's Mail app on a Mac, Clicking once on one email, selects the email and opens it in the right side panel.
Is that not what is happening?
Are you holding down a key from your keyboard?

Blue message means email is selected, and is shown on the right side panel.
When I select 1 email in the email notification column on the left, multiple email notifications on the left become highlighted in blue and the email notifications which are highlighted in blue on the left, open one on top of the other in the email open column on the right.
Why id this happening.
