Guidance for New MacBook Air Users

Hello! I recently purchased my first MacBook, specifically the MacBook Air with the M4 chip, and I would like to seek clarification regarding some concerns I have encountered online about charging habits and accessories.

I would like to ask whether it is advisable to keep the MacBook plugged in while using it for extended periods, such as for school-related tasks. I have come across mixed opinions on this and would appreciate guidance on the recommended practice.

Additionally, I am considering using a protective case to prevent scratches. However, I have seen discussions suggesting that cases may cause overheating or negatively affect the device. I would like to know whether using a case is generally recommended or discouraged.

Lastly, I would appreciate any tips or best practices on maintaining the longevity of my MacBook, particularly in terms of preserving battery health.

Thank you in advance for your insights and assistance.

Hi!

Welcome to the Community and to your first MacBook Air. They're great machines.

Here is some of Apple's guidance regarding battery health and management:

About battery health management in Mac laptops - Apple Support

In a nutshell, to get the most from your battery:

• Let the OS and charging circuits manage the charging.

• Plug in when using the computer near available power.

• Use on battery when ac is unavailable or when you must be mobile.

• Don’t subject the computer and battery to extreme temperatures.

• Don’t allow the battery to regularly discharge deeply before plugging in. Yes, it may happen from time to time, just don't make it a habit.

• Don’t obsess over battery life and/or health.

As for protective cases, I recommend a simple sleeve that will be used when transporting or shelving the computer. There's really no need for something that is always encasing the laptop. The MBA's aluminum skin is part of its cooling system and needs to remain accessible to air flow, as do the built in vents in the hinge area.
