3.5mm to Lightning adapters not working without a splitter

3.5mm headphones-to-lightning adapers do not work, require second interface

no brand works unless I use a power/sound splitter. With or without microphone (different jack types)

Any ideas? Two adapters is pretty klugy, and I have several “ legacy” devices with 3.5mm jacks.
