iMac crashing after memory upgrade, .AssetData issue

We have a 2019 iMac in our studio that received a memory boost from 16 GB to 64 GB. It ran well for about a month, but it started crashing after 10 minutes of using the Adobe Creative Cloud Apps. It was also taking an extremely long time to start up.

I ran Disk Utility while in Recovery Mode and found nothing wrong with the drive. I did see that an APFS disk was not mounted, and it could not be mounted or scanned.

I did a complete wipe and restore, and when asked which disk to load the new OS, I see a screen icon (not a drive) called ".AssetData" with the yellow warning exclamation mark off to the side. I have never seen such a thing.

Could it be a failed memory card? Or something else?

I welcome your time and energy and would like to share some wisdom on this.

Thanks, Teejay

As mentioned,Mac’s are very RAM picky.

In addition to having a bad or a loose module, the RAM could be incompatible.

I would proceed with your 2 module testing and then if that doesn’t help. I would reinstall the factory RAM modules and test.

Then I would request a refund from the seller. Next I would purchase a couple of 16GB modules from OWC and add those to the factory RAM modules.

i would return to the original RAM that came with your Mac -- make sure they are in the correct slots (slot position matter)

if those work -- swap in the two aftermarket and test (remove the good RAM)

if neither work now -- i would suspect bad install (possible conflict) or bad hardware

bad install: Erase and install -- to an external SSD -- add the suspect only -- reproduce the problem

bad hardware -- return Mac to factory original hardware -- remove all non-Apple mice, keyboards, hubs, cables, ect...

ps: strong electronic interference -- like a microwave close by -- can also cause issues
