AirPod pairing gone wrong

I got a pair of AirPod pro 2s when they came out a couple years ago and they somehow paired initially to a friends account. She has removed them SEVERAL times, I’ve paired and repaired and factory reset, sent them back to Apple… still won’t switch over to me and I can’t used find my and it says incomplete setup and one AirPod or case may be connected to another account. This is HORRIBLE. and she lives in another state so it’s not like I can just go there and visit a store with her. I am ready to throw them away

Factory resetting doesn't remove them from an Apple Account. How did your friend remove them? Forgetting the device in Bluetooth settings doesn't remove them from the account either. She needs to go into the Find My app, go to the Devices tab, and see if they appear there. If so, there is an option to "Remove from Account" (on newer iOS versions it just says "Remove").
