Lossless Music via iPhone workaround.

This is really a tip but asking if anyone else has tried this.

I’m currently enjoying Apple Music Lossless on my hifi using an AppleTV over HDMI - WITHOUT any TV or screen and run from my iPhone. I’ve set it up so I wake the AppleTV via Siri / HomeKit then ask it to play music which it does so - if you now launch the music app on your iPhone it will sync up with what’s playing on the AppleTV and you’ll see it as an audio destination but crucially NOT via AirPlay - see attached image.

In this way, I can finally use my iPhone to fully run music on my hifi but with lossless / hi-res and NO airplay.

Your hifi needs an hdmi in or use an hdmi audio extractor and of course you need an AppleTV. May also work from an iPad / MacBook over USB.

Apple really should just allow iOS to recognise if AirPlay is streaming to an Apple device and automatically switch to native lossless pull down and decoding. They can keep the AirPlay bottleneck for third parties but between Apple devices it’s deeply annoying.

Thanks. It’s as much about using the convenience of iPhone as it is the lossless stream.

Another way is a Sonos Port which is the only third party service to pull lossless directly from Apple servers and then digital out and into your DAC or hifi but those are £400 versus £100 for a used ATV 4K.
