Make "When Last Connected to This Mac" AirPod setting stop resetting

I am an editor/motion designer and have a professional grade speaker/mic/headphone setup that is how I listen to audio through my MacBook Pro. It is INCREDIBLY rare that I want to connect my AirPods to my computer. I know how to change the setting so that they only connect "When Last Connected to This Mac". However, this setting seems to get reset anytime I restart my computer, and sometimes when I just wake it from sleep mode. Is there any way to make this setting permanent? I will be listening to something actively on my iPhone and if I sit down in front of my computer, that gets interrupted. Please help!
