Note that Microsoft has a policy of only supporting the most recent three versions of macOS. These are currently Tahoe, Sequoia, and Sonoma.
Is your Mac running, or compatible with, one or more of those?

Installing MS Office:
Purchasing this at a retail store, you'd get a physical card with a license key on it. On the back of the card is a keycode that is scratched off. It is activated at the cash register. To install it, you'll need to create a MS Account (not necessarily that of Outlook.com), if not done, already. The instructions at to where to go are printed on the back.
Privileges:
Be certain you have the privileges to perform the install.
The last true "MacBook" (Retina 12-inch, 2017) can run no higher macOS than version 13 "Ventura" which no longer will run Office. If you have a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air that supports macOS 14 "Sonoma" or higher, you have a chance.
One option (assuming that you don't already have a license or subscription) is to use the following page to subscribe to Microsoft 365 or make a one-time purchase of Office: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/buy/compare-all-microsoft-365-products
Another option (not one that I prefer) is to subscribe through the Mac App Store (Apple menu > App Store).
If you already have a subscription or license, see: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/download-install-or-reinstall-microsoft-365-or-office-2024-on-a-pc-or-mac-4414eaaf-0478-48be-9c42-23adc4716658#installsteps=install_on_a_mac
