iPhone 17 battery drain

Hello Everyone,

On Tuesday, my base iPhone 17 arrived, and I noticed that, in addition to several particularly annoying iOS 26.1 bugs (stuttering, visual glitches, framerate drops, etc.), the battery life is very poor. I’m not sure why, but the battery lasts about as long as my iPhone 11 on iOS 18 (even though its battery had been replaced with a maxed 3500mAh one, it was still terrible). I haven’t even used it that much.

First you ned to give it 5 days to complete the indexing and optimization of photos that are performed in the background after the update and documented here that you should expect lag, battery drain, and increased temperature. It has been 3 days, so you should have about 2 to go to make sure that has been done.

Hi again,

Battery life feels more or less the same as before — maybe slightly better, but still not as good as expected. Last night I charged the phone up to 80%, then today when it reached 49% I charged it again up to 71%. Right now it’s at 30%.
Today’s usage:
• 4 hours 29 minutes screen-on
• 3 hours 55 minutes screen-off
I’m attaching the battery graph and the list of the apps that consumed the most battery.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Pay particular attention to the apps that show Background use. These are consuming the battery even when the apps are not opened.

  • TikTok ran for 39 minutes in the background without the app open.
  • WhatsApp ran for 1 hour and 36 minutes in the background when only using the app for 27 minutes.
  • Instagram ran for 15 minutes in the background after using the app for only 9 minutes.
  • Life 360 ran for 33 minutes in the background even though you only used if for 1 minute.

Just those 4 apps add up to 3 hours of background usage when you are not even using the app. That is not necessarily a bad thing and apps can use background processes, it is just good to be aware of their usage and how it affects your battery. It also appears you are now using an 80% charge limit which means you are already starting with a battery that has 20% of its use time depleted.

The green battery graph shows you went from the 80% to 49% in 9 hours, which is not that bad. The second portion from 71% to 30% was 6 hours later. Combined that is 72% in 15 hours and seems to be inline with the apps you are using. The apps noted are not known to be energy efficient, but you can monitor their battery usage here.

I don't give much weight to the Screen on/off time times as they are not very effective in determining what is causing the battery drain. As you can see in your screen shot it shows Screen on for 4h 29m and off for 3h 55m for a total of 8h 24m, yet clearly the phone has not been charging and running on battery power for a total of 14 hours where the screen has been either on or off, so what happened to the other 5+ hours.

My recommendation would be to get rid of the Charge Limit and use Optimized Charging and charge your phone all night every night. That is going to allow you to start the day with a 100% charge where you should be getting all day battery life. I do see yesterday was a heavy usage day, but other than that your daily battery usage has shown a steady decline and you should not need to be charging your phone multiple times a day. Some apps will consume significantly more battery power than others, but we know what they are and it is our choice to use them.

And finally, I suggest using Adaptive Power. This will take 7 days to learn your usage habits and make adjustments before it will engage. The result is that your battery will last longer each day.
