AirTag setup fails, already connected to Apple ID

Hi.

Have bought absolutely brand new AirTag in box and not able to connect it to my apple account

On my IPhone I've got message "could not complete airtag setup sign in with apple id"

see picture

On other Iphones I've got message "this air tag already connected to AppleID"


What I could figure out this problem?


iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 26

Did you try to reset the AirTag?

If you can't remove the device or item and unpair it from an Apple Account, you should reset it. While you still won’t be able to pair it with your Apple Account, this prevents the device or item from sharing your location with the previous owner.

If this does not work, you should return the AirTag.

Did you purchase this AirTag directly from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller .. or got it from another third-party source? A tag from Apple should NOT be pre-assigned to Apple Account (aka, Apple ID). It gets associated when it is initially set up.


Even if you got it "in box," it could still be used ... and, if you got it from Apple, you have 14 days to return it for either a replacement or full refund.
