Can I use a tempered glass screen guard on my MacBook display? Will it affect the screen quality or cause any issues when closing the lid? Does Apple recommend using it?"

You should not use any sort of covering on the display of your MacBook.
Apple does not recommend using anything at all.
Part of the problem is that clearance between the keyboard and screen is very tight and anything that gets between the screen and the kbd may cause damage.
Another potential for damage is that any adhesive used may remain or damage the screen when that cover is removed.
