If your Apple Account is set to Australia, then that might be a problem for signing up with a UK payment method. If the device or procedure mistakenly thinks that the account would be set to Australia when it is not, then there would probably be ways around that.

If you were living in Australia before, but moved to the UK, then consider also changing the country setting for your account. That may have consequences for previous Australian purchases on your Apple Account. Change your Apple Account country or region - Apple Support

The Support staff would love to help out, to turn this into an enjoyable experience of the Apple TV service. It certainly isn’t supposed to confuse countries for new sign-ups.

so I won't be bothering with signing up for a subscription to Apple TV.

Sorry to hear about this unfortunate roadblock. I find most of the Apple TV content (Apple Originals) quite enjoyable.

To sign up for Apple TV streaming service, one would need an Apple Account. The Apple TV app for Android would guide new users to setting up such an account. It would ask for user details, like name, country (state), DoB, a verified email address (responds to test message!), and a valid payment method.

Alternatively, one may sign up for the service on the Apple TV website, with a previously created Apple Account.

This streaming service may also be available from select offers from Apple or partnering companies in combination with purchasing certain products or services, after redeeming with the company that made this offer. Often temporary offers, but select mobile providers offer it as a perk for the duration of certain plans (i.e. as long as you are with them). E.g. EE.

Once signed up, users may access the content on any of their devices with the Apple TV app, including smart TVs and TV-connected HDMI streaming devices.
