iOS26 Offset front/back - double side printing

Only for me the function for double-sided printing disappeared after updating to iOS26? (HP printer)

I CAN'T WORK ANYMORE, INCAPABLE.

Start here:

Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

When using AirPrint, the available print options - including duplex printing and page size - are advertised by your printer. When using the print dialogue on your iPad, you can only select from the advertised options.

Ensure your HP Printer has itself been updated to its most recent version. If still using a [now deprecated] older version of the AirPrint protocol, your updated Apple devices may not work properly with the printer.

having been in software QA for MANY years

There has been no change in printing to my HP OfficeJet 5740 printer where there still is the option for Duplex printing in iOS 26. The only place where I have seen it not work has been acknowledged by HP with using their HP app and was the result of an update in that app, not the iOS update.

As I am sure you know, the printer has to support duplex printing. Not all HP printers support duplex printing and I have seen posts from some with the HP Smart Tank 5100 series printer not being able to print 2 sided, and that has always been the case. There are certainly some with that printer that will add a "me too" post where they think it is iOS related not realizing they never had the option. Some of the budget HP printers only support duplex printing manually, meaning you have to actually turn the page over instead of selecting a Two Sided print option where the printer will print both sides automatically. A driver can provide a prompt to tell you to flip the page over and feed it into the printer again, so don't know if that is what you are referring to that is lacking when using AirPrint.

I don't know which printer you are referring to, but in order to track down any problem that seems to affect some and not others, it would seem plausible to at least attempt to track it down to any particular model.

iPhone XR with iOS 18 installed still works perfectly and correctly compares the double face printing button.

iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 18 installed worked perfectly with double face printing.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max mentioned above doesn't work after installing iOS 26.

I tried with other iPhones, with iOS 18 everything was fine, but with iOS 26 there's no way to decide how to print.

The printer is an HP, with the same software and firmware as before the iOS update.

It seems to me that Apple's programmers have failed.

having been in software QA for MANY years, it just seems that apple was too involved with getting the “Liquid glass” working and not enough QA on getting many of the other things we do. PERHAPS they got a directive from above, that it HAD to be released by a certain date, working or not.????

My own HP 7605 printer works just fine with iOS/iPadOS 26.x; duplex printing works as expected.

Ensure that your printer firmware is updated to its most recent version.

Follow the discussion better. The remaining Apple devices with iOS 18 still work perfectly, with or without the HP app installed and/or updated. Devices updated to iOS26 have problems. Same HP app. Personally I have never used the hp app to print. Only for scans. Never. I only use airprint with a printer on the wifi network. Airprint is integrated into iOS.

The problem is iOS26.

The printer has the same firmware.

Before making certain criticisms I try all the possible options. I have been working in the sector for 43 years. I started when it was programmed in machine language, pure hexadecimal code.

Sorry if it's not enough.

I have no idea what criticism you are referring to. Simply stating that there has been no change with my HP printer where I also included the model is not a criticism at all. You may not have realized that the post I replied to was jwilson1347 where no information was provided as far as if they were using the HP Smart app for printing and that option was removed by the HP in an update and I even posted a link of that acknowledgment by HP.

Being in the industry for 43 years you are well aware of the troubleshooting steps and how important it is to identify the devices that are affected. That has never been provided, and for solving a unique setup where it only affects certain people, it will be next to impossible. Apparently you just seem to think the option was removed for everyone using AirPrint and an HP printer and that is simply false with not only mine, but also confirmed here by LotusPilot.

Not sure of the relevance of programming in machine language. I did too back in the day on the 6502 CPU where Assembly Language was big and the state of the art high level language was Pascal. They were good times for sure, but it makes me no better than anyone else when it comes to troubleshooting and resolving issues.

At the moment I solved it by opening a fixed panel in safari with the html page of the printer. When I have to print the page I go to the panel, connect to the printer, go to the print settings and set "single side" or "double side" as the default value. A huge annoyance but at least I can work without having to use two iPhones, one with 26 and one with 18 to print 😅 I hope they fix it soon
