Connecting a new A16 iPad to a brand new Apple TV device . . . I get nothing

I just purchased a new iPad A16. I previously used an HDMI cable to connect to my old iPad mini to watch streaming apps on my TV. Apple associate suggested the Apple TV device. It all seemed.so simple! So I purchased Apple TV and I have both my iPad and it connected to the same network. When I go to AirPlay & Continuity on my iPad, I have selected to ask to AirPlay. Am I supposed to see the Apple TV device so I can select it? Nothing is happening. I am not seeing my iPad screen on my TV. I am not tech savvy and this is highly frustrating. What am I doing wrong? I have turned both Apple TV and my iPad on and off. Nothing is connecting here.
