Apple TV + not streaming when trying to watch on Sony TV with Apple TV device only (works everywhere else)

I'm able to stream all my other apps on the device (Netflix, max, etc.) but when I go to Apple TV + the app loads and I can see all the content but when I try to play one of the programs I just get a blank screen telling me I'm not connected to the internet. If this were true, I would not be able to stream Netflix, max, etc.

I'm able to watch all the Apple TV + content from my desktop, laptop, and phone. Just no go on the Apple TV device.

I've updated all my device software and reset all my devices multiple times.

anyone else have this problem?

If you haven’t already done so, try force-quitting the Apple TV app, and restarting the Apple TV box. Then try again.

If the issue persists after that, please consider contacting an expert from the Apple Support staff. Contact Apple for support and service (phone numbers) or start your support request online (chat/email/callback).

Yes, it's broken on Sony TVs. Particularly Sony Bravia. Apple needs to fix their app. Who knows when they will.

OP describes using the Apple TV box, not the Apple TV app on the TV. The TV-connected streaming device would use HDMI and bypass any smart TV functionality.
