macOS version upgrades hinge on the year model of the iMac.

To find your iMac's year model and the highest compatible macOS version.

go to > Identify your iMac model - Apple Support

What do I need to do to upgrade my Mac?

You can't if you have a 2017 iMac. You need a newer or new Mac to run the later macOS versions.

Your iMac is fully upgraded. You would need a 2019 iMac or later to upgrade to Mac OS Sonoma.

I assume your Microsoft 365 apps are still working as they always have, it is just that Microsoft will not update them further or offer support for those apps any longer.

Without know exactly which model year iMac you own, we cannot answer the question. In short, if your iMac is old (consider a 2019 or earlier iMac pretty old) then you are limited to what you can update to. If you fit into that class then it may be time to begin thinking about replacing your old Mac with something up-to-date.

I suspect you may have forgotten the model year iMac you have, to find out it's simple. Click the Apple symbol in the upper left of the display and then click "About this Mac" and in the window that comes up among other things it will tell you the model year of the iMac.
