There are some VPN apps like Shadowrocket and game accelerators on my Mac. They were not running when the system crashed, but I'm not sure if they were secretly running in the background. The report generated by Etrecheck is as follows.

The VPN software is the most likely source of the problem. Even if the VPN app itself is not being used, there are portions of that software running at low levels within macOS....your EtreCheck report shows several of those processes running while you ran EtreCheck.

I have never heard of any of those apps before so they very likely are the cause of the problem. Plus VPNs don't provide the privacy or security that you think they do. VPNs are only useful & secure when connecting to your employer's business network (you would likely be using known VPN software associated with an enterprise/business firewall), otherwise a VPN is only useful to get around regional restrictions. See this article for more detailed information regarding VPNs:

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Please download and run Etrecheck.  The free version is sufficient.

Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and after clicking on the Reply button use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine the cause of the problem.
