Getting in to my 9 yo Mac

I disconnected my magic mouse to use with my laptop. When I've gone to reconnect, I can't log in - I can't do anything - because there is no mouse. I've been able to log back in once - but once in, same thing, couldn't open any menus to reconnect the mouse. Couldn't do anything. Any ideas appreciated, thanks.

Is it the original Magic Mouse with the replaceable AA batteries? Or the newer one with the Lightning or USB-C connector? If the latter, does it work after you plug it in and unplug it?

Worst case is, if you can log in, you can pair it using the keyboard. Once logged in, press Command ⌘ + space to open Spotlight Search. Then type "System Settings" (if nothing is found for System Settings, you likely have an older macOS version in which it was called "System Preferences," so try typing that instead). Press the return key to open the app. Use the down arrow to get to the Bluetooth menu. The Magic Mouse should be discoverable under the "nearby devices" section. Repeatedly press the tab key until the "Connect" button next to the Magic Mouse is highlighted, and then press return.

Thankyou Steve Jobs Fan 😁 I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I’ve tried all these steps and I can get as far as the Bluetooth menu showing Magic Mouse 2 with the Connect button right there - but can’t activate it! Nothing I click activates the connection. I’m wondering if I need to go and buy a usb/ cable connected mouse and see if that works? Thankyou again!!
