Mutes the other person when speaking on facetime

Anytime I’m on facetime and I talk, or make any noise at all, it mutes the other person on facetime so that I cannot hear anything they say. It’s not a wifi connection issue and voice isolation doesn’t help. It’s the most frustrating thing having to ask what they said every minute because I made a noise while they talked. Any fixes? I’ve seen more posts about this but no true fixes.
