Sounds like the iMac is getting on in years and the older software is no longer compatible with a lot of web and mail services.

Another problem with those 21.5" iMac models is, that they have a slow internal drive that get slower as they age and fill up.

Instead of playing 20 questions and guessing about what the problem(s) might be:

Are you certain the message was from AOL? I see a lot of "reset your passwords" scams mentioned in searching, and some were spoofing AOL.

Was it a text message or an email. If you still have the original email, many email readers allow to to click or hover on the sender name to see the true sending address. This example is from Apple Mail, and shows by my clicking the name that it is from Apple:

If it was a text message, I would be more concerned. In Apple messages, the true sender address usually shows at the top and in links they want you to click. This is a fake message spoofing Netflix:

If you're considering upgrading your system to a modern one consider the following: a 10 Core Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD ($999 + tax) with a 32" LG 4k monitor ($290 + tax from Amazon.com)  is $1289 + tax which is $510 less than a similarly configured new 24" iMac ($1799 + tax)  re 07/2025. Keep your keyboard and mouse from your current Mac for use with the Mini.

I got the above Mini with a 32" LG 4K monitor w/speakers because I didn't do my due diligence and didn't know the Mini had a speaker. There are many 27" - 32" monitors out there for anywhere from $100 to $500 depending on what you require.

Just some food for thought.
