Unexplained balance adjustments

If anyone has an Apple Saving account check your statements. I noticed unexplained adjustments. When I inquired about them I was told that I didn't fill out a W9. When I asked why the transactions were so vague I was told it was in my agreement. When I looked at the agreement it said that the W9 was required electronically to open the account. I asked why they did not already have it and they said II will be mailed a form which I will then have to mail back. If I hadn't noticed it they would have stolen my funds. They offered no explanation or apology. I'm including part of the exchange so you can see how unhelpful they were.

Nope, not true at all. The money withheld is sent to the IRS. You would see it on your 1099-INT as Tax Withheld and you would get all that money back after filing your income tax, depending on your income and filing status.

Even if you are not required to file income tax based on your income, it can still be filed to have any withheld tax returned to you.

As for the customer service agent not providing an explanation to you, it would not be unusual for them to not know the reason, and only able to provide a solution for you like they did. Due to the banking regulations that every financial institution must follow, there are times when information will not be given to you and by law they cannot even tell you why, and that information would not even be given to a customer service agent or available from a supervisor. The specific law is called the Bank Secrecy Act and it really does mean just that. I would not even speculate why they are requiring you to send in the W-9 after you already certified that the information you provided when the account was set up is correct. The W-9 (or equivelant) is nothing more than a statement by you certifying that the SS#/TIN you provided is correct, and matches the name you provided, along with agreeing to a couple of statements.

Seems to me they’re being very respectful of you. You actually accused them of stealing? That’s a bit of a stretch for following federal banking regulations. They opened a case for you and everything. You were rude and demanding. File all the complaints with the Security and Exchange Commission you want. SEC doesn’t investigate banks for savings account irregularities.

Try filing with the CFBP and FDIC.

Well said, and you were being very helpful as well by directing them to the correct agencies to file the complaint, as the SEC would be of no use. The customer service agent appeared to go above and beyond by providing support and I commend their patience and temperament.

You did not see the whole exchange. So you don’t know what happened to **** me off. Though he was following his script, he never actually addressed why they didn’t have my W9 even though the agreement stated that it would be electronically signed upon my application. He did tell me how to correct the error, however he or should I say Goldman Sachs made it more difficult by making it snail mail rather than electronic. In addition they only stated it was an adjustment. If they didn’t have my W9 why didn’t they contact me and check. I was under the assumption they had it because their agreement said they did. There was no apology for their mistake and if I didn’t catch it they would have kept the funds fraudulently, which to my mind is stealing. Thanks for directing me to the right agency.

Thanks for clarifying this. If you can tell me this information I don’t see why he was so vague. if he had explained it the way you did I would have no reason to worry. He didn’t. As far as I knew it was funds that were in the ether. A little reassurance would have helped. All I knew was there was money being taken out of my account. Where it was going I didn’t know. I believe an explanation would have deescalated to exchange. Thanks again.
