What caused pictures in my photo album to change original date on their own?
Large sections of my photo album have changed original date what would cause this? My memories have been ruined because I do not know when they were taken.

We can't see your machine, much less read your mind. We rely on you to give us enough information so that we can understand your issue if we are to help. We need a full description of the issue, information on what devices or machines you're referring to, the operating system (and version of it) currently on the machine. What you expect to happen, and where it fails. Err on giving too much information rather than too little.
So, what version of the OS on what device? That's key. Where are you seeing the dates reported? How did the images get there and what is their source?
Try this: On your phone, select a picture, choose Share, and then "Export Unmodified Original." Then for the location choose "On My Phone." (You may have to "Browse to the "on my phone" location.) Then go to the Files app, and look for that picture in On My Phone.
What date do you see? Is it the original correct date? This will tell us a lot.
I appreciate you helping me. One thing I noticed is that these pictures were imported into my album from a messenger app and that's probably what the problem is. I do know that once upon a time the dates were correct though. Thanks for the assistance.
That's the issue. The Exif metadata was stripped out of the files in that process.

The pictures are in my iCloud storage annd are changing the original dates. I am using iOS 26. My question is what would cause my photos to change the original date? Sorry for not being completely clear. My problem is that when I look at my photos in my album I have pictures from 6 years ago that say the original date taken was 6 months ago. I know my question sounds pretty strange, I can not believe I have to ask such a strange question but here I am asking because original dates on photos are changing.

I had several pictures that were not even taken originally at the same time span or even same location end up with the original date taken being changed to some random day? Weird right? I have seen other similar questions being posted in the past with no answer and those questions are now locked so you can not even ask those people if they ever learned what had caused it to happen to them. I am sure the same will happen to this post and the mystery will never get solved. What I really want to know is how is it even possible for the original date a picture is taken to get changed in the first place and what would cause this to happen to a normal user who has not modified anything ever?
Thank you for the reply. I tried this and unfortunately the date is not correct. This says that a picture taken in 2018 or 2019 was taken in 2024. I just noticed while going through my photo album timeline there are a lot of photos with strange random dates.

And this was with "Export Unmodified Original" rather than "Save to Files?"
