Hello, I disassembled my 2015 MacBook Pro and tried to reformat my original 500GB hard drive. The formatting process won't complete, and I'm getting error 69810.

Can I reformat my hard drive?

So this is put into an external enclosure...? You do not paint a very big picture

I might suspect—Apple's Disk Utility error \(69810\) indicates a problem during an erase operation, often caused by trying to erase the drive you're booted from, a corrupt drive, or a system-level issue.

The real question is why you needed to erase this SSD. What happened to the laptop that got you to this point? The same thing that got you here may be the same reason why you cannot erase the SSD. You may be going after the wrong problem.

For the Intel Macs, you should erase the whole physical SSD. Unfortunately Disk Utility hides the physical drives from view by default so you may need to click "View" within Disk Utility and select "Show All Devices" before the physical drive appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. See this archived Apple article for details:

Sometimes when the erase fails, you should try immediately erasing the drive again. Sometimes it will work on the second attempt made immediately after the failed first attempt.
