The issue seems to be with the VLC player app for tvOS. (VLC player for macOS doesn’t have this issue, but VLC for iOS does.) They’ve had this issue before, solved it, and now it creeps in again. 🤷‍♂️

Simplified Chinese renders fine for me through Plex (MKV with embedded subtitles or external subtitles in UTF-8) and Apple Home Sharing (MP4 with embedded subtitles) on the Apple TV box with tvOS 26.0.1 and tvOS 26.1.

It's not an issue of unicode encoding. Because all my .srt files are UTF-8 encoded, video apps such as Plex and VLC still display traditional and simplified chinese subtitles as square boxes with stutter screen. Japanese subtitle: normal. Korean subtitle: normal. I have no idea if it is the problem of apps or tvOS system, but everything went wrong after updated to tvOS26.
