Weird problem with Retouch/Clean Up in Apple Photos

I have Apple Photos (versionn 10) on two Macs, an M2 MacBook and an Intel iMac, both running Sequoia 15.7.1 (updated today). In 15.7, and still after updating, they are displaying a weird problem.

  1. When I try to retouch a photo, after option-clicking to select the source, Photos places a postage stamp-sized black box on my image. I can Undo to get rid of it, but nothing is then retouched. I attach a screenshot from a Quicktime Screen Capture video (which it seems I can't upload here).
  2. Adding to the weirdness, I also note that, though the two computers have the same system software etc, on the iMac there are three tabs above the main window (Adjust, Filters and Crop) but on the M2 there is a fourth option, namely Clean Up.

I'm not even sure what to ask! Is there a way to change the displayed tabs when editing an image? Is there a way to change the items on the side/Adjust menu (the Macbook shows Red-Eye as an option; the iMac shows both Retouch and Red-eye! This is sooooo confusing. And why, in any case, does Photos mess up all DNG and ARW images in this way, and how do I fix it?

Many thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Are you trying to use the clone tool for retouching? The option-click to select and clone a source is no longer mentioned in the Photos User Guide since macOS 15.1. Perhaps it is no longer supported. Can you retouch your photos by brushing the the offending blemishes, but with option click?

I have a Silicon Mac Mini M4 and also don't get that black thumbnail when I use Clean Up on a photo.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

It looks like this is a problem since at least Sonoma 14.2.1 according to a thread from May 2024 I just came across. Users like myself discovering that attempts to retouch or edit RAW photos caused parts or whole photos to turn dark. Can it be possible that, a year and a half later Apple still hasn't addressed the issue? I just installed a new update to Sequoia, 15.7.1. today!
