HGST Touro mobile drive failing with Apple Silicon

HT0LMX3LA7501ABB (750GiB usb Hitachi external drive) works fine (copies many GiB, formats, first aid cleanly, etc.) on an old Intel based Mac; but cannot run for more than a few minutes without disconnecting on my M1Max based laptop.

Indeed, when connected to my CalDigit TS4 hub, the constant disconnects take down the entire ensemble of drives connected to the hub.

Fails at different rates with different cables; but consistently fails with the M1Max and seems to work flawlessly with the aged Intel based Mac. Obviously I cannot exclude an OS version issue, since the aged Intel and newish M1Max cannot run the same software.

Is it just me (or just this drive) or have others observed similar failures?
